Sat 14th Jan 2014, Dorset League Div.1

WESTLAND SPORTS  1  LYTCHETT RT  0

Manager Harry Gibbs rated this Lytchett side as "the best team we have played all season" so the victory was hard-fought. The teams turned round 0-0 at the break and it looked as if one goal would win it. Sports had a golden opportunity midway through the second half to break the deadlock but skipper Jamie Green missed from the spot. However justice was done a couple of minutes later when JAMIE GREEN banged in what turned out to be the winning goal.

Sat 11th Oct 2014, Somerset Junior Cup Rnd 2

WESTLAND SPORTS  2  SOMERTON TOWN  4

Sports went out the cup in the second round going down 4-2 in a game they never really looked like winning. For the second week in a row we had no goalkeeper so Wes Gullin agreed to don the gloves. Westlands were first to push forward and Jamie Green had an early shot which went past the far post. After that things went a bit pear shaped with Somerton banging in two goals to rock us back on our heels. In the fifth minute the ball broke to a Somerton player on the edge of our box and he took a pot shot which bounced awkwardly in front of the keeper and flew into the far corner. A couple of minutes later they almost made it two when a long throw was headed onto the post by the smallest player on the pitch, some dodgy marking there. However it didn't take long for the second goal to come. The Somerton centre half had too much time to look up and ping a long diagonal ball over Westlands back line which was met first time on the volley and once again the ball flew into the far corner. Eleven minutes gone and we were 2-0 down, this was turning into a bit of a disaster. Nevertheless, Sports stuck to the task and although the visitors were always dangerous on the attack, we managed to carve out a couple of chances before the break. First Dave Beats headed back across goal and Sam Beard put a header just over the bar and the second chance came from another header, this time Sam King putting it over the top. Half-time 0-2.

A two goal deficit looked a daunting task for Sports in the second half but straight from the kick off sub Steve Ormrod went charging down the left wing and pulled the ball across to Mike Rousell who missed the target from about six yards. Westlands were pushing forward now and 2 minutes into the half got that crucial goal we were looking for. STEVE ORMROD did the business, turning on the edge of the box and firing a shot into the top corner. Westlands were back in it but 10 minutes later we lost a third when a Somerton player waltzed through our defence, evaded a couple of poor attempts at tackles, and squared the ball to a team-mate who stuck it away. That took the wind out our sails and though we tried hard we weren't really making much impression. In the 75th minute they made it 4-1. A Westlands defender gave the ball away and the Somerton attacker said thanks very much and coolly lobbed the keeper. The game was over but Sports made the scoreline look a bit better with another goal 10 minutes from the end. WES GULLIN, who was now playing at centre half and looking pretty solid, went up for a corner and forced the ball over the line in a bit of a goalmouth scramble. At 4-2 if Sports could have managed another goal it might have been interesting but we never really looked like scoring and in the end the best side won. Somerton were clinical in their finishing, everything they hit seemed to end in the back of the net, and all round they looked a handy team who should do well this season. As for Sports, well, we are still struggling to get any cohesion in the side and overall there seemed to be a lack of cup tie spirit on the day.

Westlands line up: W.Gullin, S.Plumley, S.Rousell, N.Carney, M.Perkins, S.King, M.Rousell, S.Beard, J.Green, D.Beats, J.Bell. Subs: S.Ormrod, J.Parkhurst, J.Vine.
